Printer Friendly Version Minister Selakovic: The Role of the UN is of special importance for the protection of sovereigny and territorial integrity of Serbia @ 22 December 2020 02:11 PM

 

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia Nikola Selakovic had talks today with United Nations Resident Coordinator in Serbia Françoise Jacob.

The Serbian Foreign Minister pointed out that the UN Resident Coordinator was very important in harmonizing the activity of the 19 UN agencies active in the promotion of economic and social development in Serbia, on resident or non-resident basis.

The Minister said that Serbia considers the UN to be one of the most important multilateral organizations that is of special significance for the protection of our sovereignty and territorial integrity, and which represents a unique platform for the discussion and identification of sustainable solutions in various fields. 

Serbia has consistently and continuously called for the respect of principles of international law and the legally binding UNSCR 1244 which guarantees the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia, the Minister underlined, adding that the presence and activity of UNMIK in Kosovo and Metohija is of key importance for Serbia, given that the UN framework is the guarantor of the status neutrality of the international presence in the Province.

The Minister stressed that Serbia is firmly committed to its economic and social development and expressed gratitude to the UN for assistance in the promotion of many areas, thus largely contributing to the all-encompassing reforms of our society and us being prepared to actively accelerate the European integration process.

Selakovic said that Serbia attaches great importance to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and accomplishment of Sustainable Development Goals.

Furthermore, the Minister expressed gratitude to the UN Team in Serbia for its assistance and support during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Minister Selakovic also expressed an expectation that the UN Secretary General will be able to visit Serbia in the period ahead, noting that this would benefit the entire region.
