24th March 2021

President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić met today with the newly appointed Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Director of the UN Office in Belgrade, Mari Yamashita, and wished her a warm welcome and success in her work.

President Vučić said that Serbia considers the UN an international organisation of the utmost importance, primarily for the protection of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country. He also said on this occasion that the work of the UN Office is very important, bearing in mind that it represents a link with the UN Mission in Kosovo and Metohija, and he expressed hope that good cooperation will continue.

President Vučić emphasised that Serbia attaches great importance to the work of UNMIK, bearing in mind that, based on UN Security Council Resolution 1244, it is the guarantor of the status neutrality of the international presence in Kosovo and Metohija. He expressed the expectation that UNMIK would remain engaged to an unabated extent and with an unchanged mandate.

United Nations official Yamashita informed President Vučić that a session of the Security Council, dedicated to the report of the UN Secretary-General on the work of UNMIK, will be held in mid-April.

President Vučić said that Serbia is committed to ensuring peace and stability in the region, with readiness for dialogue and compromise as the only way to resolve open issues, such as the issue of Kosovo and Metohija.

The Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Director of the UN Office in Belgrade, Yamashita, congratulated President Vučić on the successful vaccination campaign conducted by Serbia.
